Deputy Director University of Sydney Research Interests: Dougald has a long interest in the archaeology of Southeast Asia and especially Cambodia. His research experience in Southeast Asia includes the excavation in Thailand of Non Mak La, an Iron Age site (University of Pennsylvania in 1994) and Nong Nor, a coastal hunter/gatherer occupation. More recently, he has been involved with 'The Origins of Angkor Archaeological Project' (University of Otago), which has been running for over a decade, and has seen the excavation of numerous Bronze and Iron Age sites in northeast Thailand. As a component of that project, he directed the six-month excavation of Non Muang Kao, an Iron Age site. Dougald's doctoral dissertation incorporates data from Non Muang Kao and a Bronze Age site called Ban Lum Khao. In this he examines the applicability of a number of theoretical models of social evolution in mainland Southeast Asian society. His current research includes the exploration of the late Iron Age sites in northwest Cambodia. Dougald has directed excavations at Phum Snay, a site comprising a very large and wealthy cemetery. Excavation and analysis of this site have shed light on pre-state developments in Cambodia. He is also the director of Heritage Watch, a non-profit organization working to stop heritage destruction. Current Projects: An examination of Iron Age settlements in Northwest Cambodia, the investigation of human migratory patterns in Cambodia, working in conjunction with Nancy Beavan (RAFTER Laboratory) and Louise Shewan (University of Sydney).
